prepared to go to war with the white house over the hhs mandate that the church cover contraceptives in its health plans. we'll have the latest there. plus i hate to alarm you so early in the morning, but iran is changing an elite team of female ninjas. and they were put on display on iranian state television for all the world to see. we will assess the threat later in the show. first, let's get to the news live at 5:30 a.m. here at 30 rock in new york city. there are reports of new violence in syria today as government forces ramp up the assault against opposition groups in several cities. human rights observers say another 43 people were killed yesterday. the u.s. embassy is now closed. but so far the regime is not bow to go international pressure. especially after russia and china vetoed a u.n. security council resolution to stop the violence. >> reporter: mortars rained down on the city along with rockets

his terricks. russia is a long time ally and provider of arms to the assad regime. in syria, angry protesters burned flags. seems like the syrian government is treating the security council vetoes as a green light to step up the violence, as a license to kill. >> reporter: that's how many are explaining the sharp escalation of violence. the city has been under siege for days, relentless bombardment has pushed the death toll to more than 300. am includ footage not independently verified shows what the people are up against. eyewitnesses report that syrian tanks and and soldiers are moving to other cities, as well, a sign that similar attacks in other parts of the country could be imminent. witnesses say electricity and communications now have been cut off to the country's third largest city. back here at home, the catholic church is leading a vocal campaign against the obama administration over a provision

in the new health care law that would require all employers, including religious institutions, to offer contraceptives as part of their insurance coverage. catholic leaders say the mandate would force them to subsidize medical procedures that go against their dogma. president of the catholic league says never before unprecedented in american history for the federal government to line up against the roman catholic church. this is going to be fought out with lawsuits, with court decisions, and dare i say it, maybe even in the streets. that's from the president of the catholic league. white house press secretary jay carney responded to all this yesterday. >> churches, houses of worship, are exempted from this policy. those institutions where women of all faiths, many faiths work, need to have the same kind of coverage that all other american women have. we will work with institutions on try to implement this in a way that assures that the

coverage is provided and that attempts to ally the concerns that are there. >> under the government's plan, insurers would be required to cover birth control without co-pays or deductibles. that would apply to hospitals and colleges, as well. quickly becoming a hot button political issue, newt gingrich accusing the obama administration of waging a war against religion and mitt romney who rarely addresses social issues used his opposition to the man indicate to appeal to conservative voters where he was in colorado. >> the creator gave every human being his or her rights. i'm just distresseded as i watch our president try and infringe upon those rights. the first amendment of the constitution provides the right to worship in the way of our own choice. just this last week, this same administration said that

churches in the institutions they run, such as schools and let's say adoption agencies, hospitals, that they have to provide for their employees free of charge contraceptives, morning after pills, in other words, and the like. think what that does to people in faiths who do not share those views. we must have a president who is willing to protect america's first right, a right to worship god according to the dictates of our own conscience. . >> democrats say similar provisions in the health care law he passed while he was governor of massachusetts. we'll have much more on this on "morning joe." the republican presidential field preparing today for caucuses in minnesota and colorado. with millions of dollars pouring in to republican super pacs, we've talked a lot about that, president obama is now looking at his own bottom line. the president signed off now in

an effort that urges donors to send contributions to an outside fund-raising group founded by former white house staffer, a super pac. obama campaign manager says with so much at stake, we can't allow for two sets of rules in this election whereby the republican nominee is the beneficiary of unlimited spending and democrats unilaterally disarm. in the past, president obama has been an outspoken critic of the supreme court citizens united decision that stripped away limits on campaign contributions. it was take criticism that sparked a public reaction from supreme court justice alito during the president's 2010 state of the union address. justice alito shook his head as the president went after that decision. >> with all due deference to separation of power, last week the supreme court reversed a century of law that i believe will open the floodgates for special interests. including foreign corporations.

to spend without limit in our election. i don't think american elections should be bank rolled by america's most powerful interests. or worse, by foreign entities. they should be decided by the american people. >> the obama campaign's reversal is seen as a testament to the game change nature of super pacs and political campaigns. the president himself will not be put out at these events to raise money, but he will dispatch his cabinet members and members of his staff to raise money for the campaign. a republican candidate in michigan is defending an ad that some are calling blatantly racist. pete hoekstra is standing by the spot that depicts a young asian woman speaking in broken xwlish. it first aired in local markets during the super bowl. asian americans say it plays into stereotypes.

5:43 in the morning. a rook from the top of our building here. let's get a check of the weather from todd santos. good morning. >> yeah, beautiful one again especially for new york, back lieu boston, pretty much clear skies. you can see that behind me on the satellite and radar together. we'll start to see chances for maybe even a little bit of snow and cooler temperatures to move into places like d.c. by later tomorrow afternoon and evening. but until then, there's a look outside. 40 in new york, 45 down in d.c. so a fairly mild start to to the day. there's a look at the afternoon with again a lot of numbers well above ou would expect to find this time of year. sparse some of the caucus weather, shouldn't be much of an issue now throughout minnesota, down through portions of florida, that's where the rain continues today, spending up the east coast, a few areas getting up over just a half inch worth of rainfall and then of course you can see some of that action through the central u.s. we'll talk more in "morning joe"

about the snowfall in d.c. tomorrow. the giants will celebrate their football victory with a ticker tape parade this morning in lower manhattan. 1 million people expected to show up for the party. the festivities actually kicked off yesterday with the team's arrival back in newark . a separate event is planned this afternoon for their home stadium. the super bowl mvp was on a different flight from his teammates. eli manning headed south to disney world to celebrate his second most valuable player award in four years. sunday's game goes down officially now as the most watched television show in united states history. an estimated 111.3 million people tuned in. it's the third consecutive year that the super bowl has set a record that pushes the famous 1983 finale of mash down to fourth place. 111.3 million viewers. front page of today's new york "post" shows tom brady

moment after losing the super bowl being comforted by his super model wife gazelisele who asked families and friends to pray for tommy as she calls him will, but she was leaving the stadium sunday night heckled by giants fans, gisele was heard blaming his teammates. >> and last might super bowl mvp eli manning took his victory lap making an appearance on the late show with david letterman to talk about the giants come from behind victory. one topic of discussion, eli's 38 yard passes to mario manningham, the play of the game, actually set up the game winning touchdown. dave asked eli about that play. >> when you throw something like that, is it supposed to be that precise, or are you just within a 20 yard window? just look for it.

russia's foreign minister is in syria today to meet with president assad. russia joined china over the weekend as we told you in blocking a u.n. resolution that would have pushed assad from you power. if you want to sound smart, tell your friends russia reportedly signed a deal last month to sell syria about 40 advance fighter training jets worth more than half a billion dollars.

rallied around what was right and acted as one. >> eastwood is of course a long time republican, but he's taking heat from his own for what some view as spinning for the obama administration. to be clear on his position, though, here's what he said just three months ago to the "los angeles times." i'm a big hawk on cutting the deficit. i was against the stimulus thing, too. we shouldn't be bailing out the banks and car companies. he said that three months ago. yesterday after being accused of supporting the president at the super bowl, eastwood sent a statement to fox news writing i'm certainly pot politically affiliated with mr. obama. it was meant to an message about job growth and the spirit of america. i think all politicians will agree with it if obama or any other politician wants to run with the spirit of that ad, go for it. that's clint eastwood. karl rove meanwhile said yesterday he was offended by eastwood's ad. >> i was frankly offended by it. i'm a huge fan of clint
